The Veterans Trail is a barrier free walkway constructed to accommodate wheelchair users, people with walking disabilities as well as able-bodied users.
The asphalt and boardwalk trail meanders through mature oak, hickory, and maple trees. Each year on Memorial Day, a portion of the trail is dedicated to local military veterans. Over 140 veterans are honored here. The trail is located on the west side of the damn, below the visitor center.
For 25 years this site has honored our veterans and provided a great place to visit. Unfortunately, the site was deteriorating and needing to be updated. Some of the work required was the repaving of the walking trail, updating the boardwalks and resetting the rest areas that overlook the ravines. The project required an updated paved service and an engineering company to review the integrity of the main bridge and provide drawings for the needed improvements to the overlooks.
Ideally the overlooks would be moved to set into the hills instead of being raised flat surfaces. Below are a few pictures of the wood rot and pavement that needed to be repaired before the restoration project. In the first set of photographs below, the railings had fallen and the posts were rotting on the top.
The photographs below are of items that were completed during the trail restoration.
